My answer to What are considered good questions to ask veterans?
Answer by Ken Larson:
Stay away from questions related to their combat experience unless you have been engaged in military combat yourself. Don’t try to fake the experience. It won’t work.
Do not open the discussion by thanking the veteran for their service. It is passe and overdone. Most veterans don’t appreciate it.
Ask the veteran if he or she is employed and if not – and you can offer them a job do so or give them tips on where one may be available.
Discuss their hopes for the future. Ask them where they feel their military career experience can take them personally and professionally.
Ask the veteran if he or she is aware of the full range of benefits for veterans and if not inform them.
