Answer by Ken Larson:

During a break from operations, my squad installed a sewer and water system in a small village outside Bien Hoa, Vietnam. The local leaders insisted we attend a special thank you dinner consisting mainly of Nước Chấm on most of the entrees.

I was a Minnesota farm boy, used to mild walleyed pike for a fish dinner. Elected by my squad to attend the event, I received a substantial education in very spicy cuisine that evening.
