My answer to Have you ever been in a situation where you are working with an extremely disrespectful co-worker?

Answer by Ken Larson:

Yes; a Boeing executive on a multi-million dollar government program called “The Reserve Component Automation System (RCAS). He was a Director of Administration to whom I reported.

Watching him control the support functions, I realized that he was a showman with government and Boeing executive management, but a tyrant to his co-directors and to his staff. I had never seen a more vicious or cunning person in my many years in the business.

I realized that a multi-million dollar program of over twelve years in duration attracts such people. The administration director manipulated human resources, intimidated his managers with threats, flew off the handle behind closed doors and set up my co-manager for a sexual harassment suit. Two women who were subsequently promoted and transferred, filed a complaint at the director's encouragement. The complaint turned out to be bogus.

However the process of adjudicating the suit tainted the otherwise stellar career of my partner. The women did not implicate the director, who now used the suit as an excuse to split my co-manager's function, reducing the visibility this expert had formerly enjoyed on the program.

The program was later taken away from Boeing by the government and two members of the staff were convicted of fraud. I had left the job by that time, having discovered the fraud and reported it anonymously.
